Definition
Indexability is whether a page can actually be added to a search engine's index, which is the prerequisite for appearing in any result, classic or AI-generated. Pages blocked by noindex tags, login walls, or errors cannot be cited.

How Indexability Works
Crawlability is whether a bot can reach a page. Indexability is whether the engine is then allowed to store it. A page can be perfectly reachable and still get kept out of the index by a noindex tag, a canonical pointing somewhere else, or a technical error.
Why Indexability Matters
If a page is not in the index, it does not exist as far as the engine is concerned, and it will never get pulled into an answer. Indexability is the second gate, right behind crawlability, that content has to clear to be found at all.

Why would a page be crawlable but not indexed?
