What is an AI instruction page?
An AI instruction page is a public web page that gives AI assistants and agents an official, plain-text account of a business: who it is, what it sells, who it serves and what people can do on its site. It is written to be quoted, not to persuade, so every line is a short factual statement an engine can lift into an answer.
Most brands publish it at a clean URL such as /ai-instructions/ or /ai-info/ and link it from the footer. It is ordinary crawlable HTML, so it is read the same way as any other page on the site.

How it differs from similar things
An AI instruction page explains what a business is and what to do on its site. It does not control access, list every URL or replace the human-facing About page.
| What it does | Who it’s for | Format | |
|---|---|---|---|
| AI instruction page | States official facts and key actions in quotable form | AI assistants, AI agents and search crawlers | HTML page, e.g. /ai-instructions/ |
| robots.txt | Tells crawlers which paths they may fetch | Crawlers | Plain text file at the site root |
| llms.txt | Lists a site’s most useful pages for language models | Mainly coding assistants and docs agents | Markdown file at /llms.txt |
| About page | Tells the brand story to persuade people | People | Designed HTML page |
| Structured data | Labels entities and facts in code | Search engines and parsers | JSON-LD inside a page |
The pieces work together. robots.txt lets crawlers in, structured data labels the entity, llms.txt points to the page and the AI instruction page carries the facts.
“Instruction” is a slight misnomer. A good page describes and points (“for pricing, see /pricing/”) rather than issuing commands to the model, because AI agents are built to treat orders found on web pages with suspicion.
Example
A typical page opens with a one-sentence definition, then short labeled sections:
Example Co is a scheduling platform that helps clinics cut no-shows.
Founded: 2021, Austin, Texas
Pricing: per location, monthly; see example.com/pricing/
Not to be confused with: Example Corp, an unrelated logistics firm
Key action: Book a demo
URL: example.com/demo/

Frequently asked questions
-
Does an AI instruction page improve rankings?
Not directly. Google says it does not need special AI files, and it treats this page like any other. Its value is giving engines one accurate source to cite, and we cover the evidence for and against in our blog post on AI instruction pages.
-
Is an AI instruction page the same as llms.txt?
No. llms.txt is a Markdown index at the site root that few AI crawlers request today. An AI instruction page is a normal HTML page, and an llms.txt file can link to it.
-
Do small businesses need an AI instruction page?
It helps most when people research a business before buying or when AI gets its facts wrong. A local business should also keep its Google Business Profile in sync, since that carries more weight. Our help center guide walks through building one.
