Definition
AI search marketing is the practice of reaching buyers inside AI assistants and AI agents. It covers three things: earning organic mentions in AI answers (GEO / AEO), paying for placement in those answers (LLM advertising), and making products easy for AI agents to find and buy (agentic commerce). It is search marketing, rebuilt for answers instead of links.
Also called: AI search, AI-era search marketing

At a glance
- AI search marketing is to ChatGPT and Gemini what search marketing was to Google: one discipline, organic and paid together.
- It has three branches: organic visibility, paid placement and commerce.
- Organic (GEO / AEO) is the foundation. It tells you which prompts matter, which sources shape answers and where you are missing.
- Paid and commerce build on that data. Ads fill visibility gaps. Commerce turns a recommendation into a sale.
- It means marketing to AI search, not using AI to run your marketing.
Search marketing, rebuilt for answers
For twenty years, search marketing meant two things: SEO for the unpaid results and paid search for the ads above them. Most teams ran both, and the best ones used data from one to sharpen the other.
AI search follows the same pattern, with one addition. Assistants now write answers instead of listing links, so organic visibility means being named in the answer. Ad platforms like ChatGPT now sell placement inside those conversations. And AI agents can complete the purchase themselves, which makes your product data part of the marketing.
That is the whole category: show up, pay to show up where you can’t earn it yet, and be easy to buy when you do.
The three branches
| Branch | What you’re winning | Main terms |
|---|---|---|
| Organic | A mention or citation inside an AI answer | GEO, AEO, AI search optimization, AI visibility |
| Paid | A sponsored placement inside or beside an AI answer | LLM advertising, ChatGPT ads, sponsored citation |
| Commerce | The sale, when an agent shops for someone | Agentic commerce, agentic checkout, product feed optimization |
Why organic comes first
Organic is where you learn what buyers actually ask an assistant, which competitors get named instead of you, and which sources the models trust. That data is the targeting layer for everything else.
Without it, LLM ads get bought the way early search ads were: broad, expensive and guessed. With it, you spend only on the prompts where you can’t win organically yet. The same goes for commerce. Product-level visibility data tells you which items agents skip and why.
What AI search marketing is not
The phrase gets read two ways, so it’s worth being clear.
AI search marketing is not using AI tools to write ad copy or automate bidding. That’s AI marketing, a separate and much broader idea. AI search marketing is about the AI assistant as the place your buyer is: ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, Grok, Copilot and Google’s own AI Overviews and AI Mode.
How teams are getting started
- Start with organic tracking. Write down the questions a real buyer asks an assistant in your category and see who gets named. This is your baseline.
- Fix what’s cheap to fix. Crawlability, answer-first pages, clean product data. Most gaps sit here.
- Test paid where organic is weak. Pick the prompts that matter most where you don’t appear, and test placement there first.
- Get your catalog agent-ready. Accurate prices, stock and specs in a format agents can read.

How this term is used
“AI search marketing” is newer than GEO or AEO, and most of the industry still describes the organic piece on its own. A Search Engine Land survey found only 27% of marketing teams have formally adopted any term beyond SEO for their AI search work. As paid placement and agent checkout arrive, the organic-only labels stop covering the whole job, which is why we use AI search marketing as the umbrella.
