What is AI Search Optimization (AISO)?

Updated September 2026Core ConceptBeginner

Definition

AI Search Optimization (AISO) is the practice of making a brand findable and quotable across AI search surfaces, from ChatGPT to Google’s AI Mode. Unlike generative engine optimization, which is scoped to generated answers, AISO also covers the retrieval and ranking steps that happen before an answer is written.

At a glance

  • AISO covers the whole path from crawl to retrieval to citation, not only the written answer at the end.
  • The term is newer than GEO and AEO and is used loosely, often as a straight synonym for both.
  • ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Mode and Copilot pull sources differently and reward different pages.
  • The work splits in two: technical access for AI crawlers, and passages clean enough to quote.

What sits under the AISO umbrella

Four things have to go right in order, and AISO is the label for working on all four.

A crawler has to reach the page and read it as HTML. A retrieval system has to store it in a form that matches against a question. AI search ranking has to score your passage above the other candidates. Then the model has to name you when it writes.

Most brands work only on the last step, because that is the one that shows up in screenshots. The failures are almost always earlier. A page rendered entirely in JavaScript never enters the candidate pool, so nothing downstream matters. The original GEO research paper tested content changes against a fixed retrieval set, which assumed that step rather than earning it.

One practice, three vocabularies, one budget

Vendors sell AISO, GEO and AEO as three things. Your team has one content budget, and the work behind all three labels is close to identical.

Where they diverge is scope. Answer Engine Optimization grew out of featured snippets and still leans toward short factual answers. Generative Engine Optimization covers the written answer and the conversation around it. AISO stretches furthest, taking in crawl access, indexing and retrieval.

That wider scope is the reason to use the word at all. If GPTBot is blocked in your robots.txt, calling the fix GEO is a stretch. The risk runs the other way too: a scope that wide lets an agency bill for anything and call it AI search work. Ask what changed, on which surface, for which prompts.

Pick one surface and get a baseline

You cannot optimize for four assistants at once with no measurement. Narrow first.

  1. Choose the surface your buyers use. For most B2B that is ChatGPT. For research-heavy purchases it is often Perplexity. Pick one, ignore the others for a quarter.
  2. Write 30 real buyer questions in the words a customer would type. Run them and record who gets cited.
  3. Check crawl access before touching content. Fetch three key pages without JavaScript. If the text is not in the HTML, fix that first.
  4. Rewrite your top five pages as liftable passages. One idea per section, answer in the first two sentences, no back-references.
  5. Re-run the same 30 questions monthly. Movement only means something against a fixed list.

An LLM audit formalises steps two and three. Worth doing once before you commit a quarter of content work to guesses.

Which label means what

  AISO GEO
Scope Crawl, retrieval, ranking, citation The generated answer and the conversation
Typical first fix Access and rendering Passage structure and original data
Surfaces named Any AI-driven search product Assistants that write answers
What you measure Presence in the candidate set, then citation Citation rate and share of model
Term maturity Newest of the three, used loosely Has a research paper behind it

Frequently asked questions

  • Is AISO just another name for GEO?

Mostly, yes. AISO and GEO describe the same job for the same reason, and anyone using them interchangeably is not making an error. The one real difference is reach: AISO includes the crawl and retrieval plumbing, where GEO tends to start at the content. Pick whichever word your team already says and move on.

  • Where does SEO fit into AI search optimization?

Underneath it. Search engine optimization built the crawlable, well-structured site that AI retrieval depends on, and a site failing technical SEO fails AISO for the same reasons. What changes is the target: a written mention instead of a blue link, and passages instead of pages.

  • Do I need a tool to do AISO?

Not for the first pass. Crawl checks, rendering checks and passage rewrites need a browser and an afternoon. Tools earn their place at the tracking stage, once you want to know which prompts you appear in across surfaces, how that moves month to month, and who is showing up instead of you.

  • Should a small brand in a narrow niche bother?

Often not yet, and it is worth being honest about that. If your category gets few AI queries and your buyers find you through a distributor or a trade show, AISO is not where the next customer comes from. Spend the hour on crawl access, which is cheap and helps regular search anyway, then revisit in six months.
