Definition
AIO is an acronym with two common meanings in search marketing. It can mean AI Optimization, a broad label for making a brand visible in AI-generated answers, used interchangeably with GEO and AEO. Or it can mean AI Overviews, Google’s AI-written summary at the top of search results. Which one someone means usually depends on whether they’re talking about Google specifically.

At a glance
- AIO = AI Optimization: a general synonym for GEO / AEO.
- AIO = AI Overviews: Google’s feature, so “AIO optimization” means optimizing for that one surface.
- The term is too loose for most uses. Say which one you mean.
AIO as AI Optimization
Used this way, AIO is another umbrella term for the organic work of getting into AI answers. It’s broad enough to mean almost anything involving AI, which is why it shows up more in product names than in everyday conversation. If you see it in a proposal, it almost always means the same work as GEO.
AIO as AI Overviews
Google’s AI Overviews are often shortened to AIO in SEO circles. Optimizing for them is a narrower job: one search engine, one surface, and Google’s own guidance on AI features and your website applies directly.
How this term is used
Because the two meanings collide, we don’t use AIO on its own. For the general practice we say GEO / AEO. For Google’s feature we say AI Overviews.
The category is still new and these terms are used interchangeably across the industry. For a side-by-side of what each one means and who uses it, see AEO vs GEO vs AI SEO. All of them describe the organic branch of AI search marketing.
